Ingredients for Broccoli Cauliflower Salad
We love that the entire recipe can be prepped ahead of time for simple family dinners or larger parties. Just before serving, toss to coat the salad with the dressing or a halve the serving for smaller crowds.
The list of ingredients is so simple and the whole salad is made in one large bowl. I love using my mandoline slicer for slicing cucumbers and radishes; it saves a lot of time.
- Broccoli Florets: Only use fresh broccoli here. When chopping, cut down to smaller florets, about 1/2 inch pieces.
- Cauliflower Florets: Use fresh cauliflower. Same as broccoli, cut down to smaller florets, about 1/2 inch pieces.
- Cucumbers: I like to use smaller cucumbers to bring out their very best cucumber taste. You can substitute for an English cucumber if preferred.
- Radishes: Smaller radishes are preferred so they can easily be halved. Very often non-organic radishes are less spicy and/or zesty than organic radishes.
- Green Onions: We love green onions in salads, but they can be substituted for fresh chives if preferred.
- Fresh Dill: Finely chop dill to release its dill aroma, making this dish the very best you will ever taste!
- Real Mayonnaise: Use the best quality of real mayonnaise for best flavor. Adding generous amount of it makes this side dish super delicious.
- 2% Low-Fat Plain Greek Yogurt: Adds the perfect rich flavor and creamy texture. It can be replaced for equal amount of sour cream, but yogurt does not run off as quickly.
- Fine Salt: You may not need as much as it depends on the type of mayo you are using. Mayo has salt in it and sometimes you only need a teensy of salt to make this salad taste just right to perfection.
Overview: How to Make Broccoli Cauliflower Salad
This dish really requires very little effort, especially with the help of mandolin to slice cucumbers and radishes.
- Cut broccoli and cauliflower into small florets.
- Halve and thinly slice cucumbers and radishes.
- Finely chop fresh onions and dill.
- Make the dressing by combining real mayonnaise, plain Greek yogurt and fine salt.
- Toss the salad to coat in dressing just before serving.
Is Broccoli Healthy?
Broccoli is one of the healthiest green vegetables. It’s low in calorie, low carb vegetable and comes with many health benefits and important nutrients.
- High in fiber and folate
- Rich in Vitamins (K, C and A)
- Great source of Vitamin B6 and Manganese
Can I Substitute the Greek Yogurt?
This dressing is really simple with only 3 ingredients. If you don’t have Greek yogurt on hand (most people usually don’t), you can substitute it with the equal amount of sour cream.
You can also use all-sour-cream for the whole salad, removing the mayo completely. If using sour cream only, you might add a bit more salt as mayo is salty in general and with sour cream you need salt to avoid bland results of this salad.
Is Broccoli Salad a Make Ahead Recipe?
This salad is the perfect recipe to make ahead of time. Because all the ingredients stay nice and fresh once refrigerated, it can be prepped a day in advance.
Chop or slice all of the salad ingredients and arrange them in a bowl. In a separate bowl, stir together mayo, yogurt and salt to make the dressing. Stir to coat the salad with dressing just before serving.
Helpful Tips and Substitutions
- Replace cauliflower for broccoli only, by doubling the broccoli amount in the recipe.
- Substitute green onions for fresh chives and add some fresh Italian parsley.
- Replace plain Greek yogurt for sour cream or do all-sour-cream dressing and remove the mayo completely.
- Add in some dried cranberries for sweet and tangy flavor, toasted sunflower seeds or toasted nuts for even more crunch.
- Substitute radishes for rutabaga; both are zesty and spicy and very similar in taste. Insert coarse blade into Mandoline slicer and thinly slice peeled rutabaga.
How Long Will Broccoli Salad Keep?
Broccoli salad will keep for 2-3 days in refrigerator without dressing. Longer than that, the radish tends to get bitter. The vegetables in this recipe refrigerate nicely and stay fresh for few days without becoming watery.
Can You Eat Raw Broccoli?
You do not need to cook broccoli in this recipe. In fact, eating broccoli raw is more nutritious. We prefer the crunchiness and vibrant color it adds to this salad. Smaller florets are easier to chew and so satisfying with each bite.

Hi Olga I’m allergic to eggs so is there anything I can substitute the Mayo with? I tried vegan Mayo and it was disgusting.
Olga in the Kitchen says:
You can try to sub mayo for sour cream. I used only sour cream for the dressing few times myself and it tasted delicious.
