Smoked Salmon Cream Cheese Tea Sandwiches are a delicious treat and usually the first to disappear from the table. So simple but so elegant at the same time.

The sour cream adds a bit of tang to the sandwich, and the dill perfectly compliments the salmon.

Everyone loves canapes and any gathering wouldn’t be complete without some mighty good finger foods. The salmon might be a little costly, but no one really pays attention to that because they are that good!

You can toast the bread if you want that extra crunch, but I usually go with the old-fashioned way and skip toasting. Instead, I add a generous amount of cream cheese spread and even more generous amount of the salmon.

Is This a Make-Ahead Appetizer?

Unlike many tea sandwiches that use mayo which dries up quickly, smoked salmon tea sandwiches can be made ahead of time.

If I’m preparing for an event that’s later in the day, I would make these 4-5 hours before the event. Cover with a plastic food wrap so that the cream cheese doesn’t dry up and refrigerate until ready to serve.

*NOTE: For extra crunch or slightly stale bread. Brush with melted butter and line in single layer on baking sheet. Toast bread at 350°F for 5 minutes or until edges are just barely starting to turn golden. Bread should be still soft in the center.

Few Tips:

  • Smoked salmon sandwiches are best made before they are about to be served. To prepare in advance, single layer sandwiches on a serving dish and wrap well with plastic wrap to retain the moisture. If stacking, put a plastic wrap between the layers to prevent soggy bread of upper layers.
  • Serve smoked salmon sandwiches at a tradition afternoon tea, along with some freshly baked Cranberry Scones or Raspberry Scones.
